We are committed to safeguarding the environment so future generations can prosper, and we work across our value chain to help our partners do the same.
Our Environmental Management System scope extends far beyond what is typically found in an ISO 14001:2004 system, including such elements as product environmental compliance and e-waste management. Flex’s environmental management approach is intended to make all aspects of our business environmentally responsible and to avoid or mitigate negative impacts while helping our many customers do the same.
Flex has a global citizenship metrics system that allows us to track, monitor and report environmental performance on a regular basis. We use this internal measurement system to evaluate the effectiveness of our environmental management approach.
Flex adheres to all applicable laws, regulations and customer requirements regarding prohibition or restriction of specific substances in products and manufacturing, including labeling for recycling and disposal. Chemicals and other materials posing a hazard if released to the environment or coming into contact with individuals are identified and managed to ensure their safe handling, movement, storage, use, recycling or reuse and disposal.
Flex has developed a full material compliance process that focuses on customer, regulatory and Flex requirements. We strive to collect full material content information, which allows Flex to continue to calculate compliance as the restricted substance landscape continues to change, thereby avoiding the need to collect new compliance certifications from suppliers as regulations change. In addition, Flex has its own specification of hazardous substances to ensure that we control the chemicals used in our manufacturing processes.
Flex is commited to make all aspects of our business environmentally responsible
The use of resources including water and energy, and generation of all waste types, are reduced at the source or by practices such as modifying production, maintenance and facility processes, materials substitution, conservation, recycling and re-using materials. Energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions are tracked and documented at the facility and corporate level. Energy reduction programs are in place to minimize greenhouse gas emissions.
- Water Management
Flex reports to the CDP’s water program which helps businesses and institutional investors better understand the risks and opportunities related to water scarcity. Flex is also focusing on water recycling and treatment efforts across our sites globally, including our water treatment facilities in China and Mexico. Our facility in Turkey provides 40 percent of its monthly water requirements through rainwater collection.
- CO2 Emissions Management
Flex reports to the CDP’s climate change program that helps us analyze our greenhouse gas emissions and energy consumption in a structured way. Flex has installed solar panels in our China, Mexico and Austria facilities to generate electricity onsite enabling us to save energy and avoid CO2 emissions. Many of our facilities contribute toward reforestation efforts. Aguascalientes, Mexico has its own nursery garden that has germinated more than 1,200 pines in just four years. A significant portion of their production is donated to educational, environmental, social entities and state municipalities.
We are committed to responsibly sourcing minerals, and follow the EICC/GeSI Conflict Minerals data reporting format. We are an active participant in the Conflict-Free Sourcing Initiative (CFSI) and have adopted the tools published by the organization, including the Conflict Minerals Reporting Template and the Conflict Free Smelter Program. Flex is committed to promoting the expansion of these programs to drive greater transparency and responsible sourcing within our supply base.
Flex collects Conflict Minerals Reporting Templates from both customer-controlled and Flex-controlled suppliers. The collection of customer supplier data is solely for complying with due diligence and reporting obligations. We also collect and provide aggregated declarations, specific to the customer’s supply base. Flex has been involved in collecting Conflict Mineral data from our supply chain since August 2011.
